AUST WRITERS’ GUILD AWGIE AWARD 2018 NOMINATION – TOMMY MURPHY / MARK COLVIN’S KIDNEY BEST THEATRE
Tommy Murphy is an award-winning playwright, screenwriter, adapter and director. Best known for Holding the Man, Strangers in Between, Gwen in Purgatory, Troy’s House, Saturn’s Return, Devil’s Playground and has worked with Griffin Theatre Comp, Sydney Theatre Comp, Belvoir St Theatre, La Boite Theatre Comp and Black Swan State Theatre Comp. We are inviting Tommy Murphy to lead a Q&A following one of the performances.
Mark Colvin’s Kidney is based on actual events in veteran award winning ABC journalist Mark Colvin’s life, showing just how startling real-life can be. Colvin struggled for more than 20 years with a rare auto-immune disease that he contracted while on assignment in Rwanda. He later covered the Leveson Inquiry, which dealt with the infamous Murdoch phone hackings and resulted in the closure of News of the World. It is throughout this time that he met Mary-Ellen Field, an Intellectual Property Expert who was Elle Macpherson’s Brand Manager and whose career was ruined by the phone hacking scandal. Colvin known as “the man who watched the world for Australia” found himself in one of the most remarkable and unique friendships of his life.
This Theatre Production is only the second showing of this play which premiered at The Belvoir Street Theatre in 2017. It will have us all travelling on a journey that takes us with Mark Colvin and Mary-Ellen Field through a world swamped in greed where everything is based on the dollar. You will see them drowning in technology overflow, power, and greed, embarking on a journey that just might be a random act of love. We will wonder why does she do it? Is it self-evident and the only thing that she can do? This can be seen as a cold clinical world until they finally reach out and touch. We will see a profound sense of humanity as it consolidates two huge personalities, their lives and stories into the show.
